Here you will find the thought provoking activities undertaken in week 2.

Digital Pedagogy

The thought provokers of week 1 emphasised the need of incorporating ICT into pedagogy. The Australian Curriculum takes the view that ICT competence needs to be developed within the learning areas. This competence is defined as the ability to:
  • Investigate with ICT
  • Create with ICT
  • Communicate with ICT
  • Operate ICT
  • Operate and manage ICT within social and ethical protocols and practices

This competence is not limited to the specific use of a certain ICT. The rapidly changing world of ICT requires us to instill a competence which can be transferable to the work environment. Students will develop this competence as a consequence of, but not limited to:
  • sophisticated word processing to enhance text
  • conducting research
  • creating, publishing and presenting their learning
  • communication and collaborating inside and beyond the classroom
    • wikis, blogs, online forums, video conferencing
  • using simple and complex calculators
  • creating graphs
  • dynamic geometry software
  • computer algebra software
  • researching science concepts and applications
  • collection, analysis and reporting on data
  • creating animations and simulations to test predictions
  • locating, processing and communicating information
  • using spreadsheets and databases

The list of opportunities is only limited by imagination. Luckily there are just as many resources available to tweak ones imagination. This is a particular useful blog, Digital Tools for Teachers, if you are feeling limited.

The Northwest Tree Octopus

This is why students need to evalate critically the sources on the internet.

What do you make of the Tree Octopus?

Thought Provokers

We need to develop some type of philosophy of how we are going to teach in this space. The thought provoking questions are:

What is the identity of the children who walk into the classroom?

How is it that we need to be teaching?

What is it that we need to be teaching in this digital environment?

Who is it that needs to be teaching them?
